In this tutorial I will show you how to add a semi transparent checker board to your image. You will also learn about layers, masks and opacity on the way.

After:
1. Creating the Grid Pattern
First we will create the grid pattern. Open a new document in the size of one square (in my case that is 50 x 50 px). To do that go to File -> New and set the width and height to 50. Set transparent for background.
Now select the Line Tool. Pick white color and set the width to 1px.
Draw one line along the left border and one line along the top border. If you look closely you might see the lines on the pic below :)
To create a pattern out of this go to Edit -> Define Pattern and choose a name.
2. Applying the Grid Pattern
Open the image you are going to work on. Then create a new layer for the grid: Layer -> New -> Layer.
Now pick the Paint Bucket Tool and set it to Pattern. For the pattern pick the one you made in the step 1.
Click on the image and you will see a grid appear (make sure you have the right layer selected).
Use the Move Tool (black arrow) to align the grid with the right border.
Now delete the left part of the grid so only 6 columns remain. Use the Select Tool (rectangle) to select the unwanted part and press the Delete key.
