1. Camcorder |
|
| |
| I use Canon MV 700 which I bought two years ago and it was then the cheapest digital camcorder on the market, it cost me about 500$. From that information alone you can conclude that you don't need the most expensive camcorder in order to have fun with filming and editing. But all that aside, I plan to buy one of the new models that are coming out this year. The most important thing I look forward too is no more miniDV tapes - it will all go to the hard drive. Also the resolution I have now is quite small and I could do with a bigger one. The thing I allready have and am pleased with is the optical zoom, which is 18x, and can be a lot lower on some of the other camcorders. If you are planning to buy a camcorder, I suggest you look for one with a hard drive, good resolution, big optical zoom an also a good lense - the wider the better. I expect to get a good camcorder for about 1000$. |

2. Camcorder accessories |

For convenient filming it is very usefull to have a tripod because the quallity of the film is instantly better when there is no shaking. That goes especially for filming long scenes like a recital or a birdhouse. If you don't have one, you can use any surface to put you camcorder on and reduce the shaking. Another usefull thing is the stabiliser, with wich you can walk and run around and produce very smooth footage. They are very expensive so with a cheap camcorder you will probably not be buying one, an alternative is to make it yourself, which is supposedly easy and cheap - so they say - I however do not have one (yet). For transfering from miniDV to computer you need a firewire cabel, if you don't get one with your camcorder you can buy it in every computer store and it is very cheap. |

3. Computer |

Movie editing is quite a strenuous process for a computer so expect to loose all nerves if you are editing on a slow computer. I use a laptop which has Intel Centrino 1.6, 512 MB RAM, a graphic card with 128MB RAM, and 60GB of hard drive. I can say I could do with more, especially another 512 MB of RAM and more hard drive. Since new camcorder with a bigger resolution are coming out - which will probably translate to much bigger files, a big hard drive will be good thing to have. From my experience a laptop isn't the best solution for movie editing, but for now I manage ok, good side is a big resolution (1400 x 1050) and ofcourse the mobility, so I can take the "fun of editing" with me on holidays. |

4. Editing program |
|
| |
| There are many editing programs out there, the most widespread would be the Windows Movie Maker, it is free and comes with Windows. It is also not a bad program for a start and there are people who make wonders with it. I however used Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5, which was until lately the latest version, now the newest is Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0, which I have now. Other programs for advanced editing are Pinnacle Studio and Ulead Pro. |
